Cohousing for Aging Well —— Designing Urban Infill for Ageing in Place

To address housing difficulties for older residents wishing to age in place in their community, the City of Unley initiated an innovative design for cohousing. The project benefits about 22.6% of elderly residents in the city. This initiative improves welfare for older people in metropolitan South Australia, They wish to stay in their communities and downsize their property because of their altered physical or financial needs.

The initiative took an innovative ‘Alternative Infill’ housing model, the international cohousing principles, and applied community co-designs with older residents to innovate and adapt to local culture and needs. The initiative brings forth new ideas to the extent urban planning regulations and has solved land use planning and construction issues.
