Cycling Superhighways

Thirty municipalities in the capital region of Denmark have joined forces to create the cycle superhighways – a regional network of cycling infrastructure that allows long-distance commuters to commute by bicycle across municipal borders on cohesive and correlating routes. By constructing more than 850km of cycle superhighways in the region, the project aims to decrease traffic congestion, improve people’s health, and save the region's cities and municipalities from the negative effects of large amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide.

This new infrastructure already has effects. The construction of nine highways has been completed, with a total mileage of 174 kilometers. There has been an average 23% increase in the number of cyclists.14% of new cyclists used to travel by car. The initiative provides an excellent model for changing people’s transportation mode and contributes to carbon dioxide emission reduction, presenting a new opportunity for developing a carbon light city.
