Building resilience in the City food system of Antananarivo through adapted production systems

The Municipality of Antananarivo is enhancing the resilience of the city food systems through three innovative initiatives to support the city of 1,500,000 inhabitants. The first initiative aims to promote Urban Agriculture (UA). A mobile application named ‘Mamboly Aho’ (‘I Farm’) allows information sharing between the municipality and its inhabitants about urban agriculture, breeding, and waste management.

The second initiative aims to implement the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact monitoring framework (MUFPP). Antananarivo has referred to 6 from the 44 MUFPP indicators (3 criteria of selections) to revise the city’s priorities related to food.

The third initiative, called Better Food for Kids, is an initiative of the municipality that consists of installing vegetable gardens in schools and offering them a balanced meal to reduce malnutrition issues among schoolchildren. The initiative also provides a program of community production and environmental education to avoid students dropping out of school. These three initiatives work together to promote urban agriculture, monitor urban food policies, and grow food on campuses to improve children’s food nutrition.
