About the event

Cities are thickly inhabited by memories. The process of the city development has been inscribed into the urban landscape: the renovation of an old building, the launch of a new railway, the creation of a green space, and the operation of an innovative public service……

To celebrate the 10th year of the Guangzhou Award, we called for photos under the theme of “Growing with the cities”and received more than 490 pieces from all over the world that show the infrastructure construction, changes and development, folk culture, and citizens’ daily life of global cities.

In collaboration with renowned photographers and representatives of the international organizations, we carefully selected photos from all submissions for our exhibitions online and offline.

The Promotion Company of Chapala S.A (Compañía de Fomento de Chapala S.A) was established in 1920 as an effort to promote the communication of the municipality of Chapala with the capital city of Guadalajara and the capital of the country, Mexico City. The French style of the building reflects the trend in fashionable architecture of that time. It served as a railroad station that connected the maritime and land transportation of the municipality of Chapala with the capital city of the state, Guadalajara, as well as with the capital of the country. It suffered its fatal fate in 1925 with the overflowing of the Chapala Lagoon and the advances in the road network. The Company declared bankruptcy and after various events, it was donated to the people of Jalisco, being the State Government, represented by its secretariats, who turned it into a Cultural Center. Today it survives as a vestige of the urban, economic and social development of the municipality of Chapala.

I work and live in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am currently the director of urban projects at the city of Niterói.

I send two photos of my own from a series of before and after an urban intervention. It is the main avenue of road flow in the municipality of Niterói, which I had the opportunity to be one of the authors of the urban requalification project. It was really very transformative as an extremely degraded street with priority for the car, had its landscape completely modified after the implementation of the project, with new sidewalks, safe bike path and space for public transport.

Kazan zoo is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Europe. Karl Fuchs founded it at Kazan University as a botanical garden in 1806, and in 1829 the coastal areas on the shore of Lake Kaban were purchased.

For more than 200 years, the zoo has been a favorite destination for city residents of all ages. The new Kazan zoo "Zambezi River", which construction began in 2015, and opened in 2019 as the first African zoo in Russia.

Promoted by the declaration of the Kazan Kremlin as a world heritage site, and the imminence of Kazan's anniversary, the Kazan government has initiated some significant improvements to the city centre. This project addresses the master planning of three adjacent city sites totaling 21 ha, to incorporate the Kazan Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

The existing zoo is relocated to a greenfield site across a lake away from the city, linking back to the city by means of a signature bridge, which symbolically represents the body of the 'Strikaza' (dragon fly) which has inspired the extended masterplan. The tubular bridge encompasses a winter garden, at the retail end, housing a historically significant collection of sub-tropical plants, while at the zoo end the bridge terminates in a spectacular tropical house.

The zoo component has been developed in conjunction with the Zoological Society of London. Due to the harsh winter conditions in Kazan, the zoo layout clusters 'warm' species around the central tropical house to give visitors a mini zoo experience in winter without the need to venture outdoors.

The retail mall acts as the entrance to the zoo on the ground floor and contains 80,000 square meters of shopping space including a food hall on the third floor. It is expected that the retail component will help ensure that the overall development will be self-funding.

On the streets of Macau, the new, dimly lit store, which has not yet opened, contrasts sharply with the old, brightly lit store across the street, where two young men, dressed in new fashion, are intently painting the exterior of their store, hoping that their business will one day shine - a scene of hands-on, self-reliance that epitomizes the youth of the Bay Area.

People who work in the peripheral subdivisions of the metropolis have few transportation service alternatives. In addition to taking public transportation to reach their destination, there is an option for the informal transportation service known as motorcycle cabs (mototaxi in Spanish), which is also shared among people going to the same place.

From Beijing to London, these two cities have witnessed my five-year school life. They are both cites of ancient wisdom and modernization, classic and fashion, though they are thousands of miles away, you can see lots of similarities between them.

This set of photos was taken in the Party Pier and the Flower City Square. The Flower City Square (Huacheng Square) is known as the 'urban hall' of Guangzhou.

More than 10 years ago, this place was a large vegetable field, and now it has become the CBD of Guangzhou, with a magnificent view of the Guangzhou Tower and many skyscrapers.

I’m a recorder of the changing city and I’m so happy to see such changes, which shows the prosperity of my motherland, and its high speed and high quality of economic development.
