About the event

Cities are thickly inhabited by memories. The process of the city development has been inscribed into the urban landscape: the renovation of an old building, the launch of a new railway, the creation of a green space, and the operation of an innovative public service……

To celebrate the 10th year of the Guangzhou Award, we called for photos under the theme of “Growing with the cities”and received more than 490 pieces from all over the world that show the infrastructure construction, changes and development, folk culture, and citizens’ daily life of global cities.

In collaboration with renowned photographers and representatives of the international organizations, we carefully selected photos from all submissions for our exhibitions online and offline.

As night falls, viewing from the sky, the Tang Paradise (a large theme park near the city of Xi'an) and the surrounding skyscrapers form a unique picture of Xi’an, a mixture of the ancient and modern. In recent years, with the rapid development of Xi'an, the ancient gardens and architecture of the Tang Dynasty, which represent Xi'an's culture and history, have become beautiful scenery of the old city, perfectly integrated with the modern city. As a photojournalist, I travel through the city every day, recording the changes and development of the Qujiang New District with my camera.

This photo, showing a beautiful picture of the harmonious coexistence of human beings and birds, was taken in February 2021 at the Shijiu Lake Wetland in Lishui, Nanjing. With the rapid urban development of the Nanjing city, a cross-lake bridge was built followed by light rail across the Shijiu Lake Wetland. As the local government attaches great importance to the ecological protection of the waters here in the urban development process, the birds that come here to spend the winter and breed are unaffected (the photo shows the Pied Avocet).

The photos were taken at the Chongqing Shibati Old Street, which is an important corridor between the upper and lower half of Yuzhong, Chongqing, and one of the oldest streets in the main city of Chongqing. In the 1980s and 1990s, with the rapid development of Chongqing's economy, the upper half of the city was booming with high-rise buildings, while the buildings of the Shibati were old and dilapidated.

In 2009, the Chongqing Yuzhong District Government announced that the reconstruction of the Shibati would be carried out, and in 2021, thefirst phase of the reconstructed Shibati was officially opened to the public. It relies on Chongqing cultural tourism resources and integrated the development of modern cultural tourism industry, which becomes an international cultural tourism destination.

The photos were taken in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province between June and July, 2022, all by aerial drone. The photos of five different areas of Nanjing's main city, captured through telephoto lens, show the fruitful results achieved by Nanjing in recent years in terms of urban construction, greening, cultural tourism and leisurefacilities, cultural relics protection, and so on, while developing its economy through the full utilization of limited urban land resources.

Most of these places are located by the Yangtse River, not far from where I live. In this way, I can say that I am a witness to the development and changes of these "scenery at the doorstep". I sincerely hope that my hometown will become more and more beautiful, and people's living conditions will become better and better.

Contemplating Redevelopment (Hong Kong)

I took this photograph on Bonham Strand in the Sheung Wan district of Hong Kong. At that time, I was living just 10 minutes away. It was an exciting time for me as every week, almost every day, I witnessed new buildings mushrooming up and others being demolished. In my photographs I try to isolate an individual from the crowd and imagine what may be going on in their head. This photo won a prize in the British Journal of Photography’s 2020 awards and was exhibited at Arles the same year.

Contemplating the White Swan Hotel (Guangzhou)

I took this photograph in early 1984. A man, sitting alone is looking across the Pearl River towards the recently-built White Swan Hotel. I was standing on what was then wasteland, now the Zhou Tou Zui Park in Guangzhou’s Haizhu district. The White Swan Hotel is an iconic building in Guangzhou and a symbol of China’s reforms in the 1980s. From 1983 to 1984, I taught English for Management at the Sun Yat-sen University. In my spare time, I took photographs of this new China in transition. In 1987, my book Canton, Colour Photographs by Brenda Turnnidge was published. The book contains rare photo archives of this dynamic city.

Promise of a New Future (Macau)
I took this photograph on the corner of Rua do Campo in Macau, the street where I lived between 1985 and 1988 when I was teaching at the University of East Asia (the predecessor of the University of Macau). Since the time I took this photo, Macau has undergone rapid development and transformation. As one of the GBA cities, it will further develop as a new global Science and Technology innovation hub.

The century-old Chinese railways are not what they used to be. The perfect combination of the railway and technology has brought us different travel experience. This set of photos has showed us the huge change in the way of travel. The way of travel and the passengers are both changing, and the only constant thing is the heart of serving the people. To ensure passengers travel safely, railway workers start from little things, and take practical actions demonstrating the profound meaning of "People's Railways for the People" and "Passengers Come First". They serve the passengers with sincere dedication to make them feel like home.

On 8 October 2017, Mr Wang Zhonghua, who lives on Taipei Road in Hankou, Wuhan, Hubei Province, came to the woods behind the Municipal Youth Palace to practice Tai ChiSword and Tai Chi with his companions. He was 60, but still hale and hearty. He said, "After retiring at the beginning of this year, I always keep on exercising in the woods for more than 2 hours every day except for rain to maintain physical and mental health."

Since 2006 when Wuhan successfully became a national garden city, more urban greening projects have been carried out. With the increasing urban green coverage rate, the urban heat island effect has been alleviated effectively, which results in a more vibrant and eco-friendly city with more fresh air and beautiful environment.

The leafy parks are known as the "natural oxygen bars". People and naturecoexist in harmony. Nowadays, the green area in Wuhan is increasing day by day. More and more people are stepping out of their houses to exercise, read books, and make friends, enjoying a happy, peaceful, and healthy urban life in such beautiful environment.
