Overview

The Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award) was co-sponsored by the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the World Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis) and the City of Guangzhou in 2012. It is committed to promoting exchanges of experience in urban innovation and recognizing the successful practice of cities and local governments in promoting innovation and sustainable development. For a decade, the Guangzhou Award has become an important platform for exchanges and cooperation among global cities, and a repository of urban innovation and sustainable development.

The Workshop for Thought Leaders has been successfully held three editions since 2015 under the framework of the Guangzhou Award. The Workshop aims to promote knowledge sharing and capacity building on urban innovation and sustainable development for stakeholders of cities and local governments around the globe, by making the best of the platform and living cases of the Guangzhou Award.

The 2022 Workshop for Thought Leaders and the Guangzhou Award 10th Anniversary Celebration will be jointly organized by the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou Municipal Government, UCLG Community on Urban Innovation, Metropolis Regional Secretariat for Asia and the Pacific, and UCLG ASPAC Standing Committee on Women in Local Governments (SCWILG) in a hybrid form of online and offline activities from December 12 to 15, 2022. Under the theme “Innovative Cities, Shared Future”, the event will feature an exhibition on urban innovation, a series of seminars and the release of the latest Guangzhou Award research reports, providing an opportunity and platform for stakeholders to share and learn from the latest on urban innovation, exchange the advanced experience in urban development, so as to accelerate actions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Development Initiative, and chart a new future for global cities.

    The five cycles of the Guangzhou Award represent the dreams of the decade. 1,361 initiatives from 556 cities in 96 countries show the determination of global cities to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Oriented towards the future of the city, the ten years of the Guangzhou Award have encouraged exchanges and mutual learning, and promoted innovation and development, with the joint efforts of the participants. As the core event of this meeting, the opening ceremony will invite participants of the Guangzhou Award to review the development of the Guangzhou Award and celebrate its achievements.

    At the opening ceremony, representatives of the hosts and supporters of the Guangzhou Award will deliver remarks, and representatives of winning city mayors and jury members will deliver keynote speeches. Major research reports will also be released.

    Culture is one of the important pillars of sustainable development. Urban cultural heritage is not only a living tradition, but also a historical context that represents the uniqueness of a city. A city in continuous development is a living organism that needs to be renewed constantly. In the process of accelerating urbanization, it is necessary to preserve urban heritage and cultivate urban culture as the economy grows, so as to rejuvenate old cities.     The Guangzhou Award has always advocated future-oriented and innovative city development. For a decade, the slogan So Dreams Come True has been echoing. Admittedly, future-orientation and practical innovations constitute the inexhaustible energy to promote urban development.

    The closing ceremony is the last event of the series activities to celebrate the Guangzhou Award 10th anniversary. The closing ceremony includes a roundtable, where experts from the Guangzhou Award and representatives from partner organizations are invited to jointly envision the future of urban innovation and sustainable development and write a new chapter of the Guangzhou Award.

In order to further explore the value of the urban innovation initiatives and provide reference for facilitating local implementation of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, the Guangzhou Award Secretariat has carried out cooperation on urban innovation research with renowned institutions and experts around the world. As a result, a series of research reports have been completed and released in recent years, which shows Guangzhou Award’s efforts in promoting knowledge sharing, the determination and vision in advocating global urban sustainable development and inclusive innovation. Three reports of the series will be officially released during the Guangzhou Award 10th Anniversary Celebration, namely the Guangzhou Award Urban Innovation Assessment Methodology Report (Draft Zero), Learning from the 5th Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation, and the Local Implementation of the New Urban Agenda 2022.

Guangzhou Award Urban Innovation Database

The International Database on Urban Innovation contains all the original materials of over 1300 initiatives submitted to the Guangzhou Award in the past ten years. Shortlisted initiatives of each cycle of the Award have been selected into the Urban Best Practices Database of the UN-Habitat. This year, the database has been comprehensively upgraded to further promote exchanges and mutual learnings among cities and local governments around the world, and thus provide reference for sustainable global urban development.

Meet an Innovative Future — Guangzhou Award 10th Anniversary Online Exhibition

As part of the Guangzhou Award 10th anniversary, Meet an Innovative Future: Guangzhou Award 10th Anniversary Exhibition will be held online and offline, showcasing the development of the Guangzhou Award in the past ten years, and publicizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through remarkable initiatives from the Guangzhou Award, and cases of urban innovation from China and urban development from Guangzhou. At the same time, the exhibition will also show photos of Growing with the Cities photo contest and works from My City, My Vision: Industrial Design for Future Cities, which tell the stories of the city with works from the public, to encourage broad participation, increase the public's awareness of urban development and urban issues, and disseminate ideas of urban innovation and sustainable development.

Growing with the Cities — Photos of Urban Stories

Over the past 10 years, the Guangzhou Award has partnered with cities around the world, witnessing urban development and innovation. On the occasion of the Guangzhou Award 10th anniversary, the Guangzhou Award Secretariat calls for photo submissions from the world with the theme of Growing with the Cities. The submitted works will be selected by the Secretariat, in collaboration with well-known photographers and representatives of international organizations. The selected works will be displayed in the Guangzhou Award 10th Anniversary Exhibition.
